Consolidated PBY - 6A Catalina (L-766) [@ RAF Cosford]
Although an American aircraft the RAF received in July 1939 a PBY for evaluation and this resulted in an order for 50 aircraft similar to the USN's PHY-5. The RAF named them Catalina Mk1; the US Navy subsequently adopted the name Catalina. The RAF doubled its original order during 1940. Under the Lend-Lease Agreement supplies to Britain included 225 PBY-5B's [Catalina 1A] and 97 Catalina 1VA's, the latter fitted with ASV radar. Further development of the Catalina resulted in the PBY-6A [235 aircraft] with revised armament, an enlarged tail and a search scanner radar mounted over the cockpit.
